The Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders opened in August 2008 to sixth and seventh grade students in Lubbock ISD. Talkington is a collaborative public-private partnership between the Dallas-based Foundation for the Education of Young Women, Lubbock ISD and the Talkington Advisory Board.
The Foundation for the Education of Young Women (FEYW) is the vision of Lee Posey, Chairman Emeritus of Palm Harbor Homes. He developed the framework to establish the first all-girls public schools in Texas after researching the successes of The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem, NY, founded by Ann and Andrew Tisch.
The Talkington School for Young Women Leaders joins the FEYW network with the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School (Dallas-opened in 2004), the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders (Austin-opened in 2007), and the San Antonio Young Women’s Leadership Academy (opened in 2008).
On May 14, 2009, the LISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name the school in honor of Lubbock businesswoman, community leader and philanthropist Margaret Talkington. Known for her commitment to leadership positions for women and her quiet, behind-the-scenes financial support of many efforts to help children, Talkington has been a role model for generations.
