Lubbock ISD released preliminary scores for students on the 2009-10 state Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test today. The district showed growth in 85% of the 135 areas measured and double-digit gains in several areas over the preliminary scores from 2008-09.  <more information>

8th Grade Volleyball Tournament at All Saints

Two 8th grade Talkington volleyball teams will participate in a TOURNAMENT this Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11.  Talkington #1 plays the first game at 5:00pm and Talkington #2 plays at 6:00 at All Saints, 3222 103rd Street (off S Indiana).  Championship games are on Saturday evening.

LISD Spelling Bee Winner Announced
February 10, 2010

 
Makenna Ryan, a sixth-grade student from the Talkington School for Young Women Leaders, won the Lubbock ISD District Spelling Bee Saturday, February 6. Ryan was one of 41 students competing for the district championship. The winning word for Ryan was synthetically. She will represent Lubbock ISD in the regional spelling bee scheduled for March 6 at the Science Spectrum. The district runner-up was fifth-grade student Sagar Patel from Ramirez Charter School.

Students must apply to be accepted to the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders.  Acceptance is based on fall 2009 semester grades, spring 2009 TAKS scores, a writing sample and teacher recommendations.  An application packet is available from any LISD elementary or middle school counselor or online by clicking HEREThere are currently openings for incoming 6th, 8th, and 9th graders.  Incoming 7th grade applications will be considered if positions become available.

This Friday is DECADES DAY
October 6, 2009
Talkington students can participate in DECADES DAY by purchasing a $3 ticket to the Student Council Decades Dance.  Students are encouraged to dress in their favorite decade - 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's.  The Decades Dance will be from 4:00 until 6:30pm on campus and is for Talkington students ONLY.  No late buses will be available.  You may still purchase a ticket to participate in Decade Dress day and not attend the dance.  This is a student council fundraising event!

NJHS Induction Ceremony and Honor Club
October 6, 2009
Wednesday, October 14 at 3:10pm is the Talkington Sword and Shield Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony.  Talkington students with a 3.8 Grade Point Average from the 2008-2009 school year will be inducted.  Also, Talkington students who had all-As or As and Bs on the first six weeks report card will receive a certificate of recognition for the Honor Club.  These recognition ceremonies will be held on campus.

GOALS "TECHNOLOGY NIGHT" September 15

Talkington students will be released at 12:40pm on Tuesday, September 15 for GOALS (no lunch served).  Talkington faculty will host a "Technology Night" for parents that evening from 6:00-7:00pm.  Parents will receive "hands-on" training on the LISD Gradebook System and our school's website.  Parents who wish to sign up for the Gradebook must have their student's social security number and an active email account.

Talkington SYWL Summer Reading Program

All Talkington Warriors are required to participate in the Summer Reading Program.  6th graders read Absolutely Normal Chaos by Sharon Creech.  7th graders read Sing Down the Moon by Scott O'Dell.  8th graders read Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli.  Click HERE for a handout of suggestions for success with your summer reading.  Read it cover to cover the first time.  On the second read, grab a highlighter and a pen (or pencil) and work through the book again, writing in the margins (annotating), paying special attention to the literary elements on the handout.  Have your book with you on the first day of school!

Immunizations Required for all Texas Students Entering 7th Grade
June 12, 2009
Beginning August 1, 2009, Texas school students entering 7th grade will be required to have the following immunizations: Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis-containing vaccine (Tdap) (1 booster dose), Meningococcal vaccine (1 dose), and Varicella vaccine (2 doses).  A current record of your child's immunizations is due to Christi Weems, Talkington SYWL nurse, no later than AUGUST 24, 2009 (first day of school).  Texas State Law requires that students be fully vaccinated for school attendance.  Click HERE to view the official letter of notification of the immunization requirements.  Click HERE for a listing of local immunization clinics.

First Annual YWL Talent Show April 9

All YWL students are invited to participate in our first Talent Show on Thursday, April 9.  Family and friends are invited to enjoy the show which will be held in the Estacado HS auditorium at 2:00pm.  Admission for non-participating students and all guests is $1.

YWL Art Market...has moved to APRIL 16

YWL students will set up shop in the YWL campus to sell their artistic and culinary creations to family and guests on Thursday, April 16.  Students are raising money for a deposit to attend their summer enrichment program.  Please join us starting at 4:00 until students are sold out (or until 5:30).

YWL Summer Enrichment Programs Announced

All YWL students can participate in a Summer Enrichment Program funded by the Foundation for the Education of Young Women.  New 6th grade students can attend Science: It's a Girl Thing camp (Session 1) on the TTU campus June 22-June 25.  Rising YWL 7th graders can attend  the Outdoor School Environmental Science camp at the TTU Junction campus August 11-14.  Rising YWL 8th graders can attend Science: It's a Girl Thing camp (Session 2) July 20-23.

The application for the School for Young Women Leaders is now available online! Click HERE to download and print the application packet. Students interested in applying to YWL can also receive an application packet from their current school counselor.  Seventy-five 6th grade positions are available, as well as limited numbers in 7th and 8th grade.  Completed applications can be turned in to the student's current school counselor, hand delivered or mailed to YWL (415 N. Picture Perfect school photo retakes
March 2, 2009
Picture Perfect will be on the YWL campus Tuesday, March 10 at 8:00am for individual school picture retakes.  Students who missed fall pictures will have their picture made for the yearbook.  Students who would like to purchase a retake photo package may also have their picture made.  Click HERE to print out a Picture Perfect order form.

Swimming for Fitness at YWL
February 18, 2009
6th and 7th grade YWL students will go to the LISD Pete Ragus Aquatic Center for Swim Fitness classes.  Seventh graders will go February 16-19 and sixth graders will go February 23-26.  Students only need to bring a swimsuit.  Permission forms must be on file in the office.  This is a unique opportunity for middle school students and is only available at YWL. 

ELA & Reading Benchmark Testing-3rd six weeks Assessments
January 5, 2009
Sixth and seventh grade students will be taking the Reading Benchmark Exam on Wednesday, January 14.  All YWL students will also take 3rd six weeks district assessments the week of January 12-16.  It is very important to have your YWL student to school on time and ready to learn!  Students can also wear SWEATS to school on Wednesday (no uniform) because "doing GREAT on the Benchmarks is NO SWEAT" at YWL!

School Uniform Dress Day

YWL is hosting a Partners in Education luncheon on campus this Wednesday, November 5.  When we host special events, YWL requires students to wear their Dress Uniform.  Students are required to wear the black dress shirt, pleated skirt, black hose, tights (no footless tights), tall or short socks and black shoes.

PTA Establishment Meeting

Please join the School for Young Women Leaders on Tuesday, November 6 at 6:30pm as we establish our PTA.  We must have 20 members join at this meeting to establish a YWL PTA.  During this meeting, we will elect PTA Board members and establish by-laws.  Come early at 6:00 for an inexpensive pizza dinner.  The meeting will be in the YWL Cafeteria.

Semester Exam Days-Early Dismissal

Thursday, December 18 and Friday, December 19 are Semester Exam and Early Dismissal days for all Lubbock ISD students.  YWL students will be dismissed from school at 12:40pm.  Lunch will not be served.  Buses will leave campus at approximately 12:50pm and run their usual routes.

U Can Share Food Drive - Great Success!

Thank you for your participation in the U Can Share food drive benefitting the South Plains Food Bank.  YWL students collected 629 food items!  Due to a tie in contributions, Mrs. Hall's and Mrs. Durham's 7th grade Advisory classes each will receive a lunch pizza party.  Since we surpassed our goal of filling two barrels with food items, YWL students will receive an incentive dress day...details coming SOON!

YWL Workday at the South Plains Food Bank

We would like to have 50 volunteers from YWL represented at the South Plains Food Bank (4612 Locust Ave) from 9:00am - 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 6.  We need one adult volunteer (age 18 and over) for every six students.  We would like seven adults and 43 students working each of these Saturdays.  This is a great opportunity to give back to our local community.  Students will earn 3 hours of community service.  Students will bring home a form so you can register to work either or both of these Saturdays.  Your entire family is welcome to work, but please let us know how many members will be involved on the registration form.

The TTU College of Human Sciences Center for Prevention and Resilency would like to invite parents and guardians of YWL students to an evening event on Tuesday, November 18 from 6:00-8:00pm to discuss the wellness program and curriculum that is being delivered to YWL students.  Dinner will be provided only for parents or guardians.  Return the RSVP form to your student's Advisory teacher or to the YWL office by November 10.
Fun Friday FUN-rasiers for United Way

Please join us to meet and greet, learn more information about the school, plans for the summer and take a tour of the YWL campus (still undergoing remodeling).  We will enjoy a chuckwagon lunch as we get to know each other and prepare for next school year!
